Tras la casa del artista. Arquitecturas del Museo Sorolla (1905-2026), a title that translates as Behind the Artist's House, is an exhibition at Museo Sorolla that tells the story of the painter's house from its construction to the present day. It marks the opening of the museum's new extension, designed by Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos.
What it is
Curated by Covadonga Blasco Veganzones, the show brings together paintings, drawings, sculptures, photographs, plans, letters and archive documents. It opens with one of the biggest changes made to the house during Sorolla's lifetime, the opening of the large studio window, which was later blocked up again.
From there it goes back to the start of the project, when Sorolla and the architect Enrique María Repullés y Vargas designed a home that combined family life, artistic work and entertaining. Plans, correspondence and photographs reconstruct how that design came together.
The final stretch moves into the new building by Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos, where skylit rooms reinterpret the painter's former studios and a courtyard echoes the Andalusian patio of the historic house.
Why it's worth attending
The exhibition also works as an introduction to the museum's new building, which includes spaces for conservation, storage, restoration and research. It treats the house as a document that changed over more than a century, and links Sorolla's own architectural choices to the extension's use of natural light.

Free tickets are collected at the box office, with no online booking. The last visit should start 45 minutes before closing.
