When Robert Frank published The Americans in 1958, critics called it anti-American for showing a country of segregation, loneliness and consumerism rather than postwar prosperity. Nearly seven decades later, Robert Frank & Los Americanos brings the complete 83-image series to Spain for the first time, at Espacio Fundación Telefónica from 29 May to 1 November 2026, as part of PHotoESPAÑA's 29th edition.
What it is
Curated by David Campany with the support of the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris, the exhibition presents the full sequence of photographs exactly as Frank arranged them in the original book, alongside more than 120 pieces in total — including enlarged contact sheets showing his editing process, additional prints from the International Center of Photography in New York and private collections, historical editions of the book, a map of Frank's road trip route, and a documentary on the project.
Frank, born in Zurich and based in the US from 1947, made the series during an extended road trip across America in the mid-1950s, funded by two Guggenheim fellowships. What began as an outsider's optimistic look at the country curdled into something more unsettled as he encountered inequality and social tension firsthand — captured through tilted framing, deliberate blur and grain that broke every rule of the "decisive moment" school of documentary photography then in fashion.
