Fashion and art circles have long known Talia Chetrit for her provocative exploration of identity, sexuality, and the mechanics of image-making. Her work spans staged self-portraits, intimate family photographs, and raw depictions of the body, often revealing the camera, studio, or staging within the frame itself. Bunny, her first solo exhibition in Spain, runs free of charge at the Museo Lázaro Galdiano from 5 June to 30 August 2026, part of PHotoESPAÑA's Official Section, arriving thanks to Fundación Loewe.
What it is
Chetrit's practice makes visible the connection between performance and photography, blurring the line between public and private, fiction and reality — using photography itself as both subject and tool to examine control, authorship, curiosity, intimacy, and the passage of time. "Although we know the moment is performative, we also understand there's a reality embedded in the act. It's a relationship I like to play with," she explains. Her work oscillates between actively directing her subjects and simply documenting them: photographs of her partner, Denis, and their son Roman show this shift, since "young children are uncontrollable subjects because of their age, which breaks the barrier of performance. With adults it's more contained and confusing."
Bunny brings together around twenty images spanning her earliest work through previously unseen pieces, moving playfully between portraiture, staged tableaux, and unsettling still lifes — from raw, seductive scenes of bodies and objects to more anecdotal, everyday moments that seem to escape the limits of time and space. Chetrit began photographing at just 13, after building a darkroom in her parents' laundry closet; her work has since been shown at the Whitney Museum, Palais de Tokyo, LACMA, MAXXI, and more, and covered in Artforum, The New York Times, and The New Yorker.
