Put on a VR headset, and the walls of Fever Hub Madrid fall away into the Great Pyramid of Giza as it stood 4,500 years ago. Horizon of Cheops: An Immersive VR Journey into Ancient Egypt is a free-roaming virtual reality expedition running at Fever Hub Madrid from 17 June to 29 August 2026, built with input from Harvard Egyptology and already seen by more than two million visitors worldwide.
What it is
Created by the studio Excurio in collaboration with Peter Der Manuelian, professor of Egyptology at Harvard and director of the Giza Project, the experience lets small groups walk freely through a full-scale virtual reconstruction of the Great Pyramid, built from years of archaeological research and 3D scanning rather than artistic guesswork.
Participants physically walk through real space while their VR headsets place them inside the pyramid's corridors, descending into the Queen's Chamber, encountering a virtual rendering of the goddess Bastet, and witnessing the mummification process as it would have looked during the Fourth Dynasty.
Because the technology tracks real physical movement, groups of up to four people move through the pyramid together, seeing and interacting with each other's avatars inside the simulation — it's a shared virtual space rather than a solitary headset experience.
Why it's worth attending
The free-roaming format is a genuine step up from a seated VR experience: walking the actual corridors rather than watching them on a screen creates a level of physical immersion that's hard to replicate any other way, and the academic grounding means the reconstruction aims for archaeological accuracy rather than Hollywood spectacle.
